Polly Yates Promo Shoot

Apart from snow, rain and more snow, March presented me the opportunity of photographing the very talented singer/song writer Polly Yates. Polly does a grand job around the UK performing as part of several covers bands. Recently she has been busy writing a solo album of original songs to record as her first EP.
Polly was after a very high contrast and very vibrant headshot for promotional use. With this being such an up-close and personal photograph, I thought it would be nice to bring in a good makeup artist to highlight Polly’s key features. Makeup when photographed is always different to how you see it in real life; so having someone who is aware of this on set is very useful. We used Carla for this shoot, you can see her portfolio HERE

The headshots were all shot with a 50mm lens and 2 off camera flashes at full power. One as a key light and the other as a hair/rim light (double the distance away from the subject to the key light). Using a mix of broad and narrow lighting I tried a few different compositional ideas as well as a few ¾ length shots.

At the end of the shoot, I decided to try something slightly different and I added a second idea of just holding a coffee cup with Polly looking directly towards a light. I was not as pleased with the results from this as I was with the first set of head shots. But it is always worth throwing in a additional idea and theme – I have really found that it’s the best way to learn. Also, it may be that whoever you’re shooting likes those additional shots the most, you never know!

It is important as a photographer to remember that what your subject wants from the image could be quite different to what you want to see or think looks good.
